Micky's Bar - Oscar Espada
|Mickys: A Bar for all Tastes
By Oscar Espada
Ever since it opened its doors in the late eighties, Mickys has been a favorite of an eclectic crowd that finds in this establishment a unique mix of casual neighborhood bar, hot dance club and friendly spot that features sexy dancers every night and DJs that spin a wide range of the latest multi- genres.
The handsome, shirtless and friendly bartenders greet regulars by name and know everybodys favorite drink. During the daily cocktail hours the drinks, already cheaper to begin with, are two-for-one.
A true camaraderie exists among the bartenders, some of whom have been there for a number of years. Jason, for instance (pictured third from left above), started as Security 14 years ago, and because of his personality and looks, was trained as bartender and is now one of the most popular men behind the bar. He loves his job and some of his regular customers have become close friends throughout the years.
Many of the bartenders have busy lives outside of the bar.
Keith is also a real estate agent and has been at Mickys for 7 years.
Enrique, one of the most charming and popular, has his own Computer graphics and Website development company. Enrique started pouring cocktails at Mickys almost 5 years ago and feels that the bar is his home away from home; some of his best friends are also his regular customers. Some regular customers have developed crushes on him, going as far as writing him romantic notes and declarations of love; but he takes it all with humor and no romantic relationship has ever come out from any of these episodes. When a new boy is hired, even if he hasnt have much previous experience in the field, the other bartenders gladly help him become a skillful barman, as there is no jealousy between them; just a common goal: to make the customer feel welcome at all times.
Before the change of ownership in 1989 when the bar became Mickys, this West Hollywood landmark, then known as The Four Star was one of the most popular gay clubs beginning in the early sixties.
Owner/Manager Michael Niemeyer, wanting to continue the tradition opened the new Mickys in 1989 and to the present time, this is a place where theres no attitude from staff or customers, and where patrons seem to go to forget the tensions of a days work and just have a good time, meet with friends, or make new ones.
On different nights there are special events that attract a wide range of clientele. Among them: a Showgirls revue, a Porn Star night, a night of shower and bondage shows and always an array of hot exotic dancers for every taste: from the ones who are big and muscular to those with beautifully defined swimmers bodies.
For the hungry patrons, Mickys offers a select, reasonably priced menu of meals and munchies that can be served at the bar by hotties like Jason (pictured left) or in the front patio where smoking customers can people-watch while indulging in food and drinks.
On Fridays and Saturdays the bar stays open till 4:00 a.m. and on Sunday nights, after 9:00 p.m., the DJs play a wonderful selection of classic hits from the 70s, 80s and 90s- a welcome change from the latest dance remixes and pop tracks that spin during the week nights. The audience usually sings along enthusiastically every time a familiar Donna Summer, Sylvester, ABBA, or Diana Ross tune comes up giving the bar a true party ambience and putting everybody in a wonderful mood.
The heterosexualization now going on in West Hollywood has inevitably reached Mickys, but the women and straight men who occasionally visit the bar always seem to have a great time and quickly inherit the no-attitude that has become a signature of the bar. The management welcomes all kinds of clientele, but is determined to maintain this popular club as a one hundred percent gay owned and operated business.
After all, this is the city of West Hollywood; a gay Mecca that has flourished into one of the most sophisticated and sought after districts in the Los Angeles area.
