I understand that differences exist within the gay community. We are not all the same, and that is fine and healthy. What I can't get beyond is the power dynamics which begin to develop from these differences. White guys are considered more desirable,

After I submitted the first one, I have realized that I made a comment at the end which requires a further clarification. I said, "...what else is to be said in order to explain that white culture is more desirable under current situations?" Please don't get me wrong. I am not desiring for white america or anything. My purpose of the mini-essay was just to demonstrate and give the answers from the social science perspective to the discussion topic. In short, I just demonstrated that how european culture got centered into the foundation of american culture and that is also a common characteristic of a gay society. If I understood your statement correctly, you seem to be asking 2 questions: "how does the hierarchical structures based on races occur?" and "Why caucasians are considered more desirable?" First of all, I am wondering what you mean by "differences," but I assume you are talking about differences of races. I would like to begin with the first question of; "how does the hierarchical structures based on our races occur?" I know that in medicine, the differences of skin colors, for intance, are just variables to integumentary system (skin). In that sense, long story short, there's no such thing as races in medicine. I won't go into length on this. Having said that, unless you are one of those 'I didn't notice liberals' or literally blind, if you see Bill Clinton, you can tell he's white and if you see Jesse Jackson, you can tell he's black. Same thing applies to people from other racial backgrounds: asians, latinos and such. Somehow people have developed and adopted this conception of races. Whole different schools of thoughts have battled with the question of as to how we have developed and adopted the conception of races, but, in my opinion, none of them go beyond the realm of speculations; so the bottom line here really is that we should be content with the fact that we have the conception of races. (No offense to any scientist or psychologist, but when there is an issue to be considered like how we developed the conception of races, they often begin with a certain speculation, which is normal. But what they don't like to admit is that based on the speculation, they collect data and information, which conform into and sometimes are made to comform into the speculation and then present such speculation as the theory or the answer to a given issue without giving a second thought that their speculation might have been wrong in the first place. This happens a lot and they just don't want to admit it. e.g. There was this con artist who impersonated a psychiatrist and worked as a psychiatrist in the clinic. The devastating truth here to the whole psychiatry community is that this con artist did a far better job in curing patients whom real licensed psychiatrists could not even treat. Now you go figure what that means.) The moment we have the ideas on races, what'll happen here is that races do not sit next to each other like how potatoes and eggplants sit next to each other in a grocery store; races form hierarchical structures. It is quite obvious in the US, but the US is not the only country where hierarchical structures based on races can be seen although it may not be yet to the point of boiling pot like we saw in LA riot. You can see hierarchical structures based on races in virtually every country. (FYI, in the US, grouping based on races occurs at a lot younger age. When you look into elementary schools, not that kids are told to team up according to their races, but they start doing that somehow. If you don't believe, pay a visit to an elementary school during lunch time. Researchers are, in fact, interested in knowing how come they do things they do.) I would like to deal with the second question: "why caucasians are considered more desirable?" In the previous question, I basically listed 'what is' and really did not offer any explanation on mechanisms behind 'what is,' but for the second question, I would like to offer one of the explanations that seems to explain why caucasians are considered more desirable and I would like to present it in the simplest possible way. American History 001: When people started migrating into the place now known as the United States of America, vast majority of them were Europeans (= caucasians). They just did not relocate; they brought their own cultural values with them. (Think about it. Can you travel to another country like Tibet without bringing your own cultural values?) As they settled down, they started developing cities and such; but the key here is that they also settled european tradition on the land of America. In other words, THE BLUE PRINT for the American culture is European Culture. This idea of cultural blue print is particularly important because it is the foundation onto which further advancement in culture can flourish. Eventually people from other cultural backgrounds (non-europeans) started to migrate into America and just like what europeans did, non-europeans brought their cultural values to America but there's a big difference between what europeans did and what non-europeans did and it was to be clearly noted. It was europeans who laid cultural blue print with european cultures, while although non-europeans brought their cultures into America, they brought their cultural values and added new flavors to pre-existing cultural blue print (european in nature). 'Adding new flavors' by non-europeans was not as same as fusion or it was not like how salt melts in water. They assimilated themselves into european cultures and simply; the cultural blue print is a cultural solvent into which other cultures melt into. The short cut is this: think of what those first non-european immigrants might have done. It's more plausible to think that they tried to fit into America; in other words, whether or not their cultural backgrounds were diametrically opposed to european culture based american culture, as they tried to fit into America, they melted into european culture based american culture. That is just to say, whether you're Chinese-American, African-American or what, you are more influenced by european culture based american culture and to some extent, you are just europeans. Now you have to combine the concepts from the first question and the second question. Caucasians are pretty much synonym to European-cultures and because races form hierarchical structure, whatever race or culture that laids the cultural blue print stands at the top of the hierarchy. Since European culture is the basis of American culture, the cultural norms are set from the european culture based american culture perspective. That's just to say, in the simplest way; what's considered desirable for white america is desirable. (I am not saying whether that's good or bad. Ethics is another issue, which I am not dealing with here in the discussion.) Any gay society (I prefer to say, gay subculture) in the US is a specially limited version of heterosexual society; or it is a copy of a heterosexual society, which got modified in a gay way. It still carries the basic from a heterosexual society. Only a few differences exist: consists heavily in and around nightlife and adult entertainment industries and gay adult entertainment plays an important, if not, crucial role in forming a cultural icon and norms for gay societies today. This may be arguable in many ways, but the main stream gay porn industry heavily depicts caucasians. Because gay cultural icons are centered in caucasian male due to gay adult entertainment industry and because races just do not happily sit together but form a hierarchy, what else is to be said in order to explain that white culture is more desirable under current situations?
