LA Weekly - It's hard to believe that the Stonewall Riots in New York City, an event that most mark as the birth of the gay rights movement, was only 50 years ago. The year after Stonewall, the first L.A. Pride celebration took place, helping to solidify the fight for equality that had been brewing even before that, when the L.A. gay community protested the police raid at queer hangout the Black Cat Tavern in Silver Lake on New Year's Eve, 1967. The LGBTQ community of Los Angeles has always been strong, vigilant and outspoken, and as the city continues to diversify and grow, so too does the gay community.
