Engage your emotions as Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns with premieres that touch on timely topics and beloved works such as Revelations, which fervently explores the places of deepest grief and holiest joy in the soul.

Ella

Music: Ella Fitzgerald

This high-energy comical duet was created in anticipation of the legendary singer Ella Fitzgerald’s centennial in April 2017. Danced to a live recording of Fitzgerald performing the song “Airmail Special”, the duo match the iconic singers virtuosic scatting with lightning-fast, articulated movement in an irresistible tour-de-force that leaves audiences (and the dancers) breathless.

The Golden Section
Choreography: Twyla Tharp
Music: David Byrne

Tony Award winner Twyla Tharp’s exuberant ballet is full of breathtaking leaps and finely-honed partnering. Set to a new wave rock score by David Byrne, it offers “dancing of astonishing beauty and power” (The New Yorker). "...The choreography is Miss Tharp at her best. Her own vocabulary is expanded, whiplash flinging becomes daring and the partnering is out of this world" (The New York Times).

In/Side

Music: Nina Simone singing “Wild is the Wind”, words by Ned Washington, music by Dimitri Tiomkin

Artistic Director and choreographer Robert Battle noted that it was Alvin Ailey himself who said that the greatest works of art are the most personal. Set to Nina Simone’s haunting rendition of the Oscar-nominated song “Wild is the Wind,” In/Side offers audiences an intimate look at a man’s most private struggles.

"The genesis of this work came to me while seeing Verdi's Requiem at Carnegie Hall," explains Robert Battle. "I found myself utterly absorbed in the intricacies of how the choir moved as a unit and then organized and condensed themselves in the pews. The juxtaposition of the choir themselves constrained by space while their voices traveled through the hall was fascinating. I began creating the movement you will see in Mass by deconstructing the chorus. I wanted an original score and was familiar with John Mackey from previous works I had created, making him a clear choice for the composer."

Members Don’t Get Weary

Members Don’t Get Weary, the first work for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater by veteran Ailey dancer Jamar Roberts, takes an abstract look into the notion of “having the blues.” Set to the powerful music of the legendary American jazz saxophonist and composer John Coltrane, Roberts uses the dancing body to inspire the audience in this ballet The New York Times calls “as emotional as it was virtuosic.”

Revelations

More than just a popular dance work, it has become a cultural treasure, beloved by generations of fans. Seeing Revelations for the first time or the hundredth can be a transcendent experience, with audiences cheering, singing along and dancing in their seats from the opening notes of the plaintive “I Been ’Buked” to the rousing “Wade in the Water” and the triumphant finale, “Rocka My Soul in the Bosom of Abraham.”

To the background of a throbbing 1970's beat and an urban landscape, patrons in a crowded disco dance with attitude, sass, and at times, fierce despair. Tough, brutal, yet poignant, the stage sizzles with street life and physical pyrotechnics inspired by the lives of Los Angeles’ disparate inhabitants, Stack-Up depicts the emotional 'traffic' in a community that is stacked on top of each other.

Victoria

Music: Rewriting Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony by Michael Gordon

Gustavo Ramirez Sansano's Victoria pairs the Spanish choreographer’s audacious, athletic movement style with the propulsive drive of Rewriting Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony by award-winning composer Michael Gordon to create a work that feels vital and thrillingly of-the-moment.

The Winter in Lisbon

Music: Dizzy Gillespie and Charles Fishman

Dizzy Gillespie's brilliant music sets the tone for this sizzling ballet celebrating four decades of his work. Choreographed in 1992 by Billy Wilson, The Winter in Lisbon pays tribute to Mr. Gillespie as the consummate jazz musician, evoking an atmosphere in which the dancers challenge, tease, and pursue romance against a backdrop of rhythm and color.
