laweeklyDennis Romero | After years of seeing African-Americans attacked solely for their race, Los Angeles has a new top target for hate crimes: the LGBTQ community.

The revelation came in the latest annual hate crime report from the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations (LACCHR). "Homophobic hate crimes also had a high rate of violence (81 percent)," according to a summary.

aplahealthLong Beach—APLA Health’s Vance North Necessities of Life Program (NOLP) and the AIDS Food Store of Long Beach have now combined services to help meet the needs of those living with HIV in the Long Beach area. This partnership will now create the third largest NOLP site in Los Angeles County, serving more than 279 people and distributing more than 1,750 bags of groceries a month.

In 2015, the City of Long Beach reported that more than 4,700 Long Beach residents were diagnosed and living with HIV and saw a new infection rate higher than Los Angeles County (28 per 100,000 population vs 20 per 100,000).

wehotimesMarco Colantonio | An article in The Los Angeles Times revealed drug paraphernalia was scattered throughout the West Hollywood apartment of a prominent Democratic political donor, Ed Buck where 26-year old Gemmel Moore, a male sex worker was found dead.

In the story first reported by WEHO TIMES, The Los Angeles County Coroner had reported the death of Gemmel Moore, 26, of an accidental meth overdose at 7:22 p.m. on July 27 at the West Hollywood home of high-profile Democratic Party donor and political activist, Ed Buck. The youth’s death reportedly occurred just hours after he left his family in Texas in order to join Buck.

wehotimesMarco Colantonio Rocco’s Tavern has leased the shuttered Citibank space on the corner of San Vicente and Santa Monica Blvd in the heart of WeHo’s Boystown.

Citibank abruptly closed this location in September of 2015 with barely a few days’ notice to depositors. The space has remained vacant for the past two years. Speculation was that a rent increase was the main reason for the closure.

“25% off everything” a sign inside the store reads. “Moving to the new gayborhood Downtown opening soon.”

gaylifelaLos Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has honored Jorge Usatorres for his work in creating scholarships for LGBTQIA students at Los Angeles City College.

This newest scholarship is the third created by Usatorres, former owner of Faultline, the iconic gay bar. Usatorres sold the bar last year and, in a sign of appreciation to the community and Faultline’s patrons and staff, decided to establish two LGBTQIA scholarships at LACC, which is located near the Melrose Avenue bar.

laglcAngie Magaña has been faithfully working a Saturday shift at the Center’s Audre Lorde Health Program for lesbian and bi women for nearly a year now.

“I just want more people to know that we’re here and that we have all these resources available for them,” said Magaña. “We really are trying to raise awareness that we have this special, safe place for women. The Center gives amazing health care. But it’s been frustrating to go out into the community and hear people say, ‘I can go there if I’m a woman?’”

laglcNearly 2,000 LGBTQ young people, parents, and other adults attended the 25th annual Models of Pride conference at the University of Southern California on October 29.

Until three weeks ago, parent Keith Gregory didn’t think he’d be among them.

“Our child just told us three weeks ago that she is a transgender female and we’ve been looking for some people to talk to and support groups,” Gregory explained during a lunch break.
